A Pet Peeve of mine is when you’re dealing with a company, normally with their customer service in some way, and they’ve very clearly made a choice that benefits them not you.
Making it really hard to find where to cancel a membership for instance, for the sake of the few people who’ll keep their membership because it’s less inconvenient they’re leaving many more with a final sour taste in their mouths. It’s a strange choice to make but it must be one founded on spreadsheets rather than people, if we do this we make this much extra money, forgetting that those numbers are people.
I often wondered the similar thing about a shoe shop I used to work in, they took pride in hiring under 18s to work the shop front because they could pay them a lower minimum wage, and even management were getting very low wages and tiny commissions.
And it always boggled my mind that these were the people (myself included) selling the shoes and making the money for the store, and if you pay peanuts you get monkey’s, who don’t care all the much, and who are getting a little over £5 per hour with the knowledge that they were completely dispensable.
How hard can they really be expected to work? Hard enough and no more I’d say.
Again a very top-down spreadsheet approach, if we save money on labour we’ll get left with more profit.
Maybe it’s part of a business model I just don’t understand or agree with but it makes very little sense to me and in my mind can only be recipe for disaster.
