I was listening to a new podcast, Humans Of Ultrarunning, where Host Candice Burt was talking to coach David Roche, they were talking about peoples obsession with being the fastest and getting the fastest time and he said something I thought was really interesting.
The Ego Monster is insatiable, you’re never going to feed the ego monster enough results to make it happy, the finish line will always be pushed back.
And that is absolutely true for running but it’s also true for everything, if you only ever push further you’re never going to get anywhere, you’re always going to feel a little disappointed at having a goal that you haven’t met yet.
Now I love a goal, but this is similar to my post doing it for the money, it’s more about using goals to direct you but really falling in love with the process, really enjoying the act of doing rather than the act of achieving and trying to leave your ego behind.
It’s not easy to do but awareness is a good place to start, I certainly have an ego monster who creeps up from time to time and now I can name and shame him when he does.
If you’re interested in running at all I recommend checking out the Humans Of Ultrarunning podcast well worth a listen.
